Speed and Exhaustion Among Truckers a Real Problem Chicago, Illinois - February 5, 2014
Recent fatal crashes in Indiana and Illinois have brought much needed attention to the issue of truck safety. An ABC Chicago investigative report issued last week in the wake of those crashes has exposed a wide range of safety issues concerning truck drivers that puts motorists at risk.
Fast Truck Enterprises manufactures a product called the "Safety Pass Pro," designed as an undetectable method of bypassing truck speed limiters (known as governors). Governors are installed on trucks to keep them below safe speeds, reducing speed-related truck crashes. "Any time someone uses some device or some type of method to bypass a safety feature, everyone should be concerned about that," says Tom Green, a crash reconstruction expert.
Additionally, ABC Chicago found instances of truck drivers using fake log books in an effort to avoid hours of service requirements. Federal rules allow truckers to be behind the wheel for a maximum of 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty. These fake log books, often referred to as "comic books" by truck drivers, put more exhausted truckers on the road.
Driver fatigue combined with speeding makes for a dangerous combination for America's highways. If nothing is done to address either issue, more and more fatal truck crashes will continue to occur throughout the country.

Group of U.S. Truckers Contesting Cross-Border Trucking Program in Supreme Court Washington D.C. - November 4, 2013
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), an American trucking trade group, is contesting a Department of Transportation pilot program that allows commercially licensed Mexican truck drivers to drive in the U.S. The group maintains that the pilot program, which went into effect in 2011 as part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), is contrary to a statute mandating that truck drivers carry a valid U.S. commercial trucking license. The program basically treats a Mexican commercial license as the equivalent of a commercial license issued in a U.S. state. Both OOIDA and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters filed separate challenges to the program once it took effect, according to Trucking Info.
A Washington D.C. Circuit Court found against both challenges. In response, OOIDA filed a petition for writ of certiorari [a request for the Supreme Court to hear the case] on October 24, contesting the ruling. Now OOIDA has taken their cause all the way to the Supreme Court, urging it to take up their challenge of the pilot program. The Department of Transportation has until November 27 to respond to the OOIDA petition for writ of certiorari.
